Ply Magazine Giveaway

8/4/2018

I really did vow that 2018 would be the year I blogged more...
However this spring has been full of snow, kitchen fitting, and lots of exciting new business things, and writing a blogpost always seems to fall to the bottom of the list. Note to self, must do better!

So, in an effort to get back in to the swing of things I've got a giveaway...
I've been a longtime fan of Ply magazine, and occasionally write an article for the magazine.

In actual fact I've written an article in the latest edition. It's all about a workshop held at our guild where we spent the day learning to spin linen.
Picture
I get my subscription from The Threshing Barn, but as well my subscription copy I also have a contributors copy, so I thought we'd do a giveaway.

This edition is all about Linen, so I'm setting you a little challenge based around my Linen containing blend- Silk Road.

You need to leave a comment, with a link to a pattern that would be ideal for this blend.
Remember it's one with high drape, and low elasticity. You can use a single colour, or multiple shades.

Check the rest of the comments, because only the first comment suggesting a pattern will count. If someone else has suggested a pattern before you then you need to go and find a different pattern!

You have until Midnight GMT (UK time)  on Saturday 14th April to leave a comment which counts as your entry.

So remember, it needs to have a  link to the pattern, and it needs to be a pattern that no-one else has posted before you. Rather than a random drawing the winner will be the pattern I like best, so choose wisely!

I'll post the magazine out internationally, and will contact the winner by email, so you need to leave your email in the box that says "email address" when you leave your comment.

I would think somerhing like the Multnomah shawl would be a great choice - you'd want something drapey and this shawl looks wonderful in handspun yarn.

I’d go for tussah, desert sands, oasis, bazaar and dyer

This is a woven scarf pattern, I think I would use the Neutral and the dark blue for weft, and pick from the remaining colors for the warp. It would be glorious!

I have to choose just one pattern, when there's so many? (This is always my problem when knitting, too. I get halfway and then find another pattern that would suit the yarn even better.)

But I think I would knit this one: http://knitty.com/ISSUEff13/PATTlewis.php
I would probably change the front a bit though, and add a few splashes of colour, since I never can stick to a written pattern.

I've been wanting to spin linen, and other plant fibres, for a long time, but never plucked up the courage to try it properly.

Such beautiful colours would work really well in a ‘True Colours’ shawl, the linen would give a fantastic drape too

When i think of linen I always think about summer knits that are beautiful and flowing. I love how this is both simple but also that the lace gives it a bit of interest. It will definitely be on my summer knitting list.

One day I plan to spin a linen blend for this summer top https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/linum-tee. I think it would look good in any of the silk road shades but I'd probably choose The Storyteller for mine

I reccomend Vaara (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/vaara) as a perfect linen containing pattern. I have some yarn for one myself and think silk road handspun would make a really special one.

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/waiting-for-rain I wanted to choose something other than a shawl and yet this shawl is too beautiful to ignore. I made it with drapey alpaca but it would be beautiful in a linen blend too.

I have actually stashed away some of your gorgeous Silk Road for precisely this purpose... I was charmed with your On the Spice Market, and would like to make one too eventually (and I never copycat normally...)

But if I could spin enough yardage of the right weight, I would love to knit a(nother) Waterlily, slightly oversized and very flow-y (https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/waterlily-7). It is a very practical and comfy top, and should feel nice with the linen blend.

Now, I have the pattern, I have the fibre... Just need to spin it! :)

Shetland Crescent is often made in subdued colors, but it would be beautiful in the Silk Road colors!

This is a beautiful lacey scarflet that would suit a solid or soft gradient. The smaller version wouldn't require a huge effort for spinning, but still have a big impact!

Camino Bubbles by Kieran Foley
I’ve got this pattern lined up for some lovely drapery cashmere but it would be great with something a little crisper I think and it’s pretty summery so the linen would work.
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/camino-bubbles
Also you could use a solid colour of have fun mixing a few!

I think this little cardi would be beautiful in any of the Silk Road colours!

Ooh, this is stunning, and a pattern I’d not noticed before. Look out for an email asking for you address and I’ll get the magazine sent off to you.

Tussah + desert sand, oasis, bazaar and flecks of dyers/temple to make the yellows and green pop

I'm not sure if it's ok with rules but I would knit shawl by Asja Janeczek which is just tested and will be published soon: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/asjaknits/spring-bounty
As I love all blue shades, Temple and Storyteller (plus natural) would be my first choice. But I'm also tempted by contrasting sets (combined with natural) like Desert Sands + Temple, Dyer + Storyteller, Bazaar + Temple...
