Hilltop Cloud run in a way that tries to minimise our negative impact on the plant and maximise our positive impact on humanity.
Hilltop Cloud, the projects we sell, the social spaces we create, and the communities we manage, are open and accepting of all people, regardless of disability or ability, skin colour, sexuality, gender, ethnicity, or religion.
We try to stand up for the rights of marginalised groups, and are mindful of our responsibilities and privileges, and attempt to overcome our societal biases.
Our websites (hilltopcloud.co.uk and hilltopcloudshop.co.uk) are designed to be simple to use, and visually unobtrusive. We mostly use prebuilt templates, to try and ensure they remain as accessible as possible. Both sites have a UserWay embedded plug in to help you use these sites as comfortably and easily as possible. However, if you find sections hard to read, difficult to navigate, or have any issues with the site please email me and I will try to fix them.
Our videos all feature corrected Closed Captions, and we will continue to offer online events in the future to allow access to those who find in-person events challenging.
I operate the business as a sole trader. I do all the dyeing, product sourcing, administration, coding and design.
Doing this allows me to keep the prices of my products as low as possible. I want them to be accessible to as many people as possible. Fibres are offered at a wide range of price points, in varying quantities.
However I also believe that I deserve to be paid a fair wage for the work that I do.
For that reason I do not offer discount codes, or run sales.
The only time that fibre is reduced in price is when it gets old and I don't feel comfortable asking customers to pay full price.
We rarely do charity fundraisers, and when they are run, the donation comes out of my income. I'd rather you pay a lower price and donate to the charities that you choose to support, if you are in a financial position to do so.
Online courses are offered using a Pay-What-You-Can model with a no-questions-asked discount available for anyone who feels they need to use it.
None of our wool comes from mulsed-sheep, and we try and be clear and open about the origins and manufacturing processes of the fibre stocked.
Our packaging is sourced to provide protection for your goods, lower postage weights and therefore reduce the impact on the planet.
Where possible it's compostable or biodegradable. Most of our incoming packaging is either reused or recycled. Our full packaging policy, and the reasons behind our choices can be found here.
We don't include things in packaging that you may not want or be able to use. These items aren't really free or gifts, you would be paying for them with increased product prices. We don't do fancy packaging. It would take longer for us to pack parcels, which increases costs.
Our water comes from a spring behind our house. We try to be mindful about the amount used, reducing it as much as possible, and using safe working practising to ensure the our dyeing chemicals do not impact negatively on our environment. We dye in a way that reduces energy consumption, and the electricity used comes from renewable sources.
My first dye studio was a second-hand static caravan, giving new life to a structure that was no longer suitable for using as accommodation, and would otherwise have been scrapped. When this was no longer repairable it has been replaced with a wooden cabin, built using locally sourced larch and other sustainable materials by a local firm. This has improved insulation so is more efficient in our energy use drying fibre during the winter months.
As a business based in Wales we try to highlight aspects of Welsh culture and history, and support local businesses.
Diolch, Thank you for being a customer and being a part of this journey.
