September 2024 Update-
I'm taking a break from teaching in 2025, please contact me later in the year to enquire about 2026 dates.
All my online courses remain available with full support.
Never tried a virtual workshop? They 're a great way to learn a new skill from the comfort of your own home. Close up cameras allow you to really see what I'm trying to demonstrate, without needing to peer over the shoulders of others.
"This was my first virtual workshop and I really enjoyed it. I found it to be relaxed but well paced. Your management of cameras and the rest of the technology was brilliant and you seemed to be completely at home in the situation. I came out of the day with a set of samples that I am very pleased with and can use as reference in future, but more importantly I feel confident to tackle any silk that I come across as you have removed the fear."
The list below is my current offering for talk and workshops.
Online talks/workshops
Topics for 2-3 hour interactive talks/lectures (also available in person)-
- The Textile Trade in Mid-Wales
- Fibre Dyeing
- Spinning with a Purpose: Get control and make the yarn you want to make
- Spinning for Larger Projects
- The Origins of the Modern Sheep
Virtual Workshops-
- Silk Spinning Sampler. We’ll cover everything from hankies to top, eri, mulberry, tussah. We’ll look at twist levels and spinning techniques to change the type of yarn we produce from this versatile fibre.
- Wool Breed Explorer. Sheep are such varied creatures, and their fleeces can be spun in to a huge variety of yarns. As modern spinners we’re lucky to have access to many of them in pre-prepared tops. In this workshop we’ll explore the characteristics of the breeds, and learn how to spin them in a way that maximises the qualities of the fibres.
- Plant Fibres are fun! For years I put off exploring plant fibres because I thought they were really hard to spin…but then I bit the bullet and they’re really not. In this workshop we’ll explore lot of different plant based fibres and learn how to spin them.
- Thick or Thin; Get control. Learn to spin your yarn in a huge variety of thicknesses, and how to set up a spinners control card you can be consistent in a spinning project.
In person teaching
- Getting more from your drum carder
- Colour combining without the dye pot
- Colour theory

- Art Yarn Spinning; how to use art yarn skills to become a better all-round spinner. These yarns teach excellent wheel and drafting control.
- Ply Matters; Learn different plying techniques, how to judge plying twist, and the effects ply twist have on your yarn and fabrics.

I have a background as a Secondary Science Teacher, so am able to deliver content effectively to large groups. You'll get a class/workshop that is tailored to your needs, where everyone leaves feeling that tthey've acheived something/learned something new.
I've taught classes at many guilds around the UK, my calendar is usually booked up very quickly.
I've written articles for magazines such as Spin Off and Yarnmaker and Ply. I taught a week long course at the Association of Guilds of Wevaers, Spinners & Dyers Summer School in 2019 focusing on the content of my book; A Guide to Spinning Hand Dyed Fibre.
A large amount of equipment is available for class members to use, so drum carding workshops are possible even if your group only has a limited number of drum carders.
If you would be interested in a workshop, or having me a teach at your event, please email me, to discuss options. I am more than happy to travel, and if workshops can be arranged with neighboring groups it’s possible to split travel costs.
